In this episode
In this episode I sit down with Gina Conroy — author, teacher, and writing coach — who first came into my world as a guest at my very first Conversations with Passion and Purpose event. She was the one bravely raising her hand and asking the hard questions, and I love that about her. So it felt only right to have her here to share her story more fully.
Gina is an empty nester who thought this season would be about chasing her own dreams — traveling, writing, dancing. Instead, she rolled right into becoming a full-time caregiver for her mother. What she shares so honestly is how she grieved the plans she had, shifted her mindset, and learned to pursue her passions inside of her purpose rather than setting them aside completely.
We talk about her writing journey, the books she's created to help others tell their stories, her refreshing take on "life balance" as a teeter-totter rather than everything weighted equally, and one of the most beautiful analogies I've heard about adjusting your sails when the wind changes course. If you're in a season where your plans got rewritten, this conversation is for you. Keep going.
Key takeaways
- Your passion and your purpose can coexist — Gina learned to pursue what she loves (writing, teaching, dancing) inside of her current purpose as a caregiver, even when it looks different than she planned.
- Life balance isn't about giving everything equal weight at the same time. Gina sees it like a teeter-totter — in some seasons one priority gets most of your attention, and that's okay.
- Tracking how you actually spend your time (rather than adding more to your to-do list) helps you notice when an area of life is being neglected — the idea behind her Life Balance Journal.
- Everyone has a story to tell. Whether you write it or speak it, the goal is to give yourself a voice — and 'show, don't tell' is the simple principle that brings words to life.
- You don't have to be an expert to start writing — Gina was a naturally gifted writer who still had to learn the craft, and it's never too late to begin.
- Adjust your sails. Like sailing toward a destination, you set a course, but when the wind shifts you tack and adjust instead of letting circumstances blow you wherever they want.
- So much of what holds us back comes from filtering today through our past — growth means getting to a clean slate so you can create the life you actually want.
“I see life balance more like a teeter-totter, seesaw. So not everything needs to be in balance at the same time.”
“I believe everyone has a story to tell and to give people a voice.”
“I still have my passions. They're just a little quieter because my purpose is really to take care of my mom.”
“You may think you've set your course, but the wind changes and you have to adjust it — or you'll be in irons.”
