In this episode

In this episode I sit down with my incredible State Farm agent, Tania Bledsoe, and I cannot wait for you to hear her story. Tania was born in Mexico and moved to the U.S. when she was six, the oldest of four daughters of two hardworking parents who came to this country in search of a better life. That grit and work ethic she watched in her parents — including a restaurant they built and ran for fifteen years — became the foundation for everything she's done since.

Right out of high school, Tania found her own path forward through the military. She served more than twenty years, first as a chemical operations specialist and later as a civil affairs specialist, where she got to use her Spanish and take part in missions like building a school and running pop-up medical clinics in the Dominican Republic. When her kids reached the age of asking "where's mom," she put family first and transitioned out — and found her next calling in insurance.

What I love most about Tania is that her passion isn't really insurance — it's people. She lights up talking about helping families protect what they've worked so hard for, and about the relief she sees when a Spanish-speaking customer realizes they can finally ask their questions in their own language. We talk about staying motivated when the going gets tough, setting your own measure of success instead of comparing yourself to everyone else, and finding balance so your family never feels like they're competing with your goals. Keep going — this one will encourage you.

Key takeaways

  • A strong work ethic often starts at home — Tania credits her parents' perseverance, including the restaurant they built and ran for fifteen years, for the drive she carries today.
  • The military can be a doorway, not just a destination. Tania asked enough questions to find a path with the GI Bill and other incentives, and it taught her she could push herself far beyond what she thought possible.
  • When you get a 'no' or a hard moment, ask yourself: is this going to matter in five minutes or for the long term? Give it only as much mental energy as it truly deserves.
  • Cold calling and sales feel impersonal at first — the skill is learning to brush it off, take a breath, and keep moving forward without taking it personally.
  • Set your own measure of success. Instead of comparing yourself to social media or even a friend in the same field, ask: am I doing better than I did last year? Am I moving in the direction I want?
  • Balance is a priority you choose. Tania reminds herself that someone else 'killing it' may have a different season of life — and she won't let her kids miss time with mom to chase a number.
  • Review your insurance regularly and don't be afraid to ask questions — coverage needs change as life changes (marriage, a house, kids, a car you no longer have).
I feel like there's a lot of people in our situation that need that person to tell them, you can make it, stay positive, stay motivated, do what you have to do, and keep moving forward.
Is this going to affect me for the next five minutes or is it going to affect me for a long term period? That's how much time you need to mentally devote to it.
I also have learned that it is important to set your own measure of success.
We're helping people protect the things that they've worked so hard for.
