In this episode

In this episode I sit down with Jackie Potter for a conversation that is close to my heart, and in honor of National Adoption Month. Jackie and her husband Chad were high school sweethearts who dreamed of starting a family early. Their path began with heartbreak — a late-term miscarriage at twenty weeks, and then a failed adoption when their first birth mother changed her mind after six weeks. But what unfolded next was, in Jackie's words, "a rainbow of all rainbows."

Jackie was adopted herself at age two, so the idea of building a family through adoption never felt foreign to her. She and Chad walked an open adoption journey that ultimately brought them their children, and along the way they've poured into other families too — meeting couples for dinner, moms for coffee, being a listening board for anyone wrestling with the fears and questions that come with adoption. I love that she sees adoption not just as building a family, but as a ministry.

We also get to hear about Jackie the entrepreneur. She and Chad have a heart for restoring old buildings in Tulsa, and that passion grew into J. Potter Collective — a collection of event venues including the vintage Station 13 fire station, the Union Building in the Pearl District, and Pecan Valley. She's raw, she's honest, and she reminds us that you can be a mom, a wife, a friend, and so much more, all at once. Keep going — this one will stay with you.

Key takeaways

  • Jackie was adopted at age two, which made adoption feel natural when she and Chad faced infertility — sometimes your own story prepares you for the calling ahead.
  • Their journey began with deep loss — a late-term miscarriage at twenty weeks and a failed adoption after six weeks — yet they kept going and found redemption.
  • Open adoption can be a gift, not a threat: Jackie reframes the fear of birth-parent involvement as an opportunity for connection, while still setting healthy boundaries.
  • When building an adoption 'life book,' be completely honest and raw — you never know which simple detail will connect a birth mother to your family.
  • Adoption is also a ministry. It's not only about building your family, it's about being there for and helping repair the birth mothers along the way.
  • On the fear that an adopted baby won't feel like 'your own' — Jackie says the moment the baby is placed in your arms, there's no difference; they're simply your kids.
  • You can wear many hats at once. Alongside motherhood, Jackie built J. Potter Collective by restoring old Tulsa buildings into event venues — and she thrives through consistency and protecting work-life balance.
