In this episode

In this episode I sit down with Christy Lindsay, a longtime friend and sorority sister from our days at Oklahoma State, to talk about her brand-new venture, Cedar and Lily Clothier. Christy has spent twenty-one years selling heart valves, and when she became an empty nester she did something I love — she went back to school. She earned an online entrepreneurship graduate certificate, took a class called "How to Launch a Business in 100 Days," and started asking questions of everyone who would share with her. The result is a high-end boutique in Downtown Jenks with a heart for giving back.

What makes Cedar and Lily so special isn't just the beautiful clothing, accessories, skincare, and jewelry — it's the purpose woven through it. Every quarter Christy will feature a rotating nonprofit serving women and children, giving back a portion of sales and connecting her customers to organizations that might just spark a new passion in them. The store itself is designed as an open, welcoming space with a full kitchen, room to host bridal showers, girls' nights, and trunk shows, plus a customer-focused experience built around remembering what you love.

Christy's biggest message is one I want you to carry with you: you don't have to know everything to follow a dream. She didn't know "squat" about opening a boutique — she just learned it one bite-sized piece at a time. If you're standing at empty nest, or any transition, wondering whether to take the leap, this conversation is for you. Take the chance. We only have this one life. Keep going.

Key takeaways

  • You don't have to know everything to start — Christy bought a book, took a class, and asked questions to learn the business one step at a time.
  • Take transitions like empty nest as an invitation to feed the creative and curious parts of yourself. Christy set up career coaching first, then went back to school.
  • Build a team around your gaps. You won't be good at everything, so surround yourself with talented, trusted people who complement your strengths.
  • Purpose can be built into a business — Cedar and Lily rotates a nonprofit every quarter serving women and children, giving back a portion of every sale.
  • Most people are generous with their knowledge. When you're kind, respectful, and prepared, people will teach you and open doors.
  • Dress in what you love, not your age. Christy stocked lines that transcend generations so mothers and daughters can both shop the store.
  • Don't be afraid to look like you don't know the answer. Have a plan, a vision, and a way to get the resources you need — then take the chance.
I don't want people to be fearful about doing anything that they think they might have a passion for. Just take the chance. We only have this one life.
You don't have to know everything to follow a dream or a passion. I didn't know squat, and I thought, well, I'm just going to learn.
Women can be all of those things. They can be strong, and they can be kind and feminine. That is one of the beautiful things about being female.
We just need to really focus on building each other up and celebrating all of our differences.
