Summer Mini Series, Part 1: Investing in Passion and Purpose

In this episode
In this episode I'm kicking off something I've been excited about all year — a summer mini series. These are shorter, focused conversations where I walk you through the things I get asked about most, especially by the women I speak to about following and strengthening their passion and purpose. Part one starts right at the foundation: what passion and purpose actually are, so we're all on the same page.
I describe passion as that inner blue flame — the thing that lights you up and comes to you naturally, those God-given gifts and talents that feel effortless to you even when they look impressive to everyone else. Purpose, I always say, equals fulfillment, and so often it's tied to that sense of calling on your life. Passion fuels action, and purpose sustains it.
I also share a little about my friend and former guest Muriel Fahrion, the artist behind Strawberry Shortcake and the Care Bears, who knew her gift young and still works in it almost daily. And I leave you with four questions to sit with if you don't yet know your passion — because figuring this out is an investment of time in yourself, and you owe that to yourself. Keep going. I think you'll find this one helpful.
Key takeaways
- Passion is that inner 'blue flame' — it lights you up and tends to come naturally to you. If something is a constant struggle, it's probably not where your gift lives.
- Purpose equals fulfillment, and it's often used interchangeably with 'calling.' Passion fuels action; purpose sustains it.
- Your gifts can be so effortless that you don't even notice them — ask friends and family what you're good at, because it's often obvious to the people around you.
- Muriel Fahrion's test for passion: if you're excited to do it and can't take your mind off it when you're not doing it, it's your passion.
- Pay attention to your energy. Work that's life-giving creates energy even when you're tired — and Nancy believes working in your passion makes burnout less likely.
- Ask yourself: What makes me lose track of time? What would I do with no fear of failure or judgment? What would I do if money were no object? When have I felt most fulfilled?
- When you start working in your passion, your purpose tends to line up and reveal itself — it's an investment of time in yourself.
