In this episode
In this episode I sit down with David Leifeste, a therapist and coach with over four decades of experience and more than 25,000 clients, to talk about his brand-new book, The Possibility of You. January feels like the perfect time for this conversation — so many of us are looking at the year ahead and asking what we really want for our lives, our work, and our relationships. David has spent ten to twelve hours a day, fifty weeks a year, for forty years sitting with people as they dig into their minds and histories, and he's distilled all of that wisdom into one practical, user-friendly book.
We get into something I think we all wrestle with: getting out of our own way. David explains how the beliefs we formed in early childhood — about whether we're good enough, smart enough, lovable enough — quietly run the show for the rest of our lives unless we go back and challenge them. He calls it "outside-in living" versus "inside-out living," and he's beautifully honest about his own fears and insecurities, even around putting this book into the world.
At the heart of it all is his OASIS method — Openness, Analyzing, Sensing, Ideas, and Solutions — a simple, repeatable way to make better decisions and step into the life you were designed to live. I love that this gives you a real tool in your tool belt, especially if the question you're carrying is "how do I find my passion and purpose?" Keep going — this one will encourage you.
Key takeaways
- Getting out of your own way starts with recognizing that the limiting beliefs running your life were often formed between ages zero and five — and that as adults we get to go back, challenge them, and update them with the truth.
- "Outside-in living" means shaping yourself around other people's approval and what feels safe; "inside-out living" means operating from your authentic values and God-given gifts.
- The OASIS method is a five-step way to make grounded decisions: Openness (stay curious, drop the fixed mindset), Analyzing (assess objectively from the left brain), Sensing (confirm it in your gut/spirit), Ideas (let action steps emerge from solid ground), and Solutions (the shifts that move you into your next best self).
- Fear, insecurity, and ignorance are common obstacles — and David names ten things that get in your way, including anxiety, depression, dysfunctional relationships, a toxic faith belief system, and feelings of inadequacy.
- Understanding a problem without knowing what to do about it is frustrating — David built the book to be practical and applied, focused on real how-tos, not just more of what you already know.
- There are many ways to learn the material depending on what resonates with you: read the book, listen on Audible, or join the courses and podcast to walk through it alongside others.
- If the question you're carrying is "how do I find my purpose?" — you're not alone, and a simple, repeatable method can help you take real action instead of staying stuck.
