In this episode

In this episode I sit down with Becky Fields Wilson — banker, entrepreneur, and success coach, and the founder of Positive On Purpose. Becky and I share so much in common (we've both been called Pollyannas!), and I loved getting to know the heart behind her two-decade career in banking, where she now serves as a managing director at MidFirst Bank. She has this beautiful superpower of seeing the best in people, holding out belief for them before they can believe it for themselves.

We talk about leadership as service, why mentorship matters so much (and how you can find a mentor even from afar, through books and voices you trust), and how Becky's definition of success has shifted over the years. As she says, success isn't about a destination — it's about the person you have to become to get where you want to be.

Then we go somewhere raw and vulnerable. Becky opens up about her breast cancer diagnosis at 42, the deep depression that followed her double mastectomy, and the gratitude walks that slowly turned her focus from everything that was wrong back to everything that was right. This one made me tear up more than once. Whatever you're carrying today, I think you'll feel seen. Keep going.

Key takeaways

  • Seeing the best in people is a leadership gift — Becky often holds out belief for others (like the teller who became one of her best lenders) before they can believe it for themselves.
  • Success isn't a destination; it's who you become on the way there. Wherever 'there' is, it's rarely what you imagined — usually harder, with more responsibility.
  • You can find a mentor even when one isn't in front of you. Dig into books, talks, and trusted voices whose values line up with yours, and start there.
  • Real mentorship means being honest about where you failed, not just where you succeeded — that vulnerability is what actually helps people.
  • When life knocks you down, ask 'what's ONE plate I can spin right now?' and trust you'll add the rest back over time. You don't have to do it all at once.
  • Where your focus goes, your energy flows. Becky's gratitude walks retrained her to notice what's working instead of only what's wrong.
  • Separate your identity from your title, income, and net worth. When it mattered most, Becky's letter to her kids was about love, faith, and impact — not her career.
  • Ask yourself: am I showing up as a victim or a victor? The story you tell yourself about what happened shapes what comes next.
